Dear visitors to our website,

I am very pleased about your interest in the city of Schwabach. On this website you will learn a lot of interesting facts about the city and its surroundings.

The industrial and craft city of Schwabach has around 41,000 inhabitants (as of December 2020) and, as an attractive business location in the middle of the European Metropolitan Region of Nuremberg, offers a wide range of job opportunities. To the north are the cities of Nuremberg, Fürth and Erlangen, and to the south is the Franconian Lake District.

With regard to the large cultural and recreational offerings, Schwabach represents an outstanding center in the region. During a visit to the historic gold beater town, there is of course no way around the picturesque market square and the impressive town church located directly behind the town hall. The best thing to do is to set out on a little discovery tour through the beautiful old town yourself and experience the fascinating "gold leaf" history of the town on the spot! You will notice: Schwabach combines tradition and modernity.

To make your visit a little bit more palatable, we would like to provide you with some additional information on this page.
We are looking forward to your visit!

With kind regards
Your Lord Mayor

Peter Reiß

Economy

The city of Schwabach has always been known for a variety of crafts: from breweries and gold foil workshops to the first industrial enterprises in needle manufacturing and wire drawing. Today, medium-sized crafts, production and services have established themselves in the city. Most of these companies operate in market niches and have little competition even at the federal level.

Culture and Sports

The city of Schwabach impresses with its typical Franconian townscape with lovingly restored old buildings and small alleys. The old town was awarded the "Europa-Nostra" medal in 1979 as the first German heritage town in Europe for its exemplary infrastructure, excellent architecture and local environmental protection. In the center of the historic town, the magnificent town church (1495), the town hall (1528) and the so-called Schöne Brunnen (1717) are located in the middle of the market square.

Schwabach has a large number of cultural institutions: library, galleries, puppet theater, music school, popular education center and city archive. A visit to the city museum is also worthwhile: here you can learn a lot about the city's history. A special feature of the museum is the unique egg exhibition with the world-famous Fabergé egg. In summer, the art biennial ORTUNG attracts numerous visitors beyond the city limits.

Every year in summer, thousands of people gather on the market square to enjoy themselves during the three-day folk festival ("Kärwa"). Around 35 sports clubs provide a wide range of sports activities for young and old. The modern open-air swimming pool next to the city park is an inviting place to swim when the outside temperatures are hot. And the Franconian Lake District can also be reached in just 30 minutes by car. Various water sports activities, such as sailing and surfing, can be enjoyed on the 1,500-hectare lakes.

Schwabach maintains a regional partnership with Shenzhen and a city or project partnership with a total of six municipalities. These include Les Sables d'Olonne (France), Gossas (Senegal), Kemer (Turkey), Kalambaka (Greece) and Coronel Suárez (Argentina).

Environment and Sustainability

Environmental protection and sustainability have an important status in Schwabach. For example, energy is generated from wastewater treatment plants by processing biological waste using modern waste processing methods. Biodiversity plays an important role in the planting of parks and green spaces in the city, as well as in the surrounding forests, in order to protect flora, fauna and animals.

In cooperation with its Argentine partner municipality Coronel Suárez, the city of Schwabach wants to localize the global sustainability agenda 2030 in various steps. The establishment of a specific unit for the environment, climate protection, mobility and sustainability in 2022 also represents an important signal.

Social Affairs and Education

In the city of Schwabach there are many kindergartens, activities and facilities for children and young people. All common types of schools are represented: elementary schools, secondary schools, high schools and preschools for students with special educational needs. Due to its good connections to the surrounding cities of the metropolitan region, including Nuremberg and Erlangen, Schwabach is also an interesting place to live for younger people who are studying at the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg or Georg Simon Ohm University of Applied Sciences.

Elderly people can also find a comfortable place to live in Schwabach in one of the nursing homes or retirement homes. For those in need who are looking for help, various charitable organizations and the women's shelter provide support.

Health

Schwabach has a wide network of doctors, counseling centers and self-help groups. The Schwabach hospital has specialist departments for internal medicine, accident and general surgery, anesthesiology and intensive care. In addition to the municipal clinic, Schwabach also has a service of the health department in Roth, which can be contacted for health questions, in cases of illness as well as for prevention.

Location and Transportation

Schwabach is located in the center of the region, close to the A3, A6 and A9 freeways. The Munich-Nuremberg railroad line runs through Schwabach. The Nuremberg train station is very easy to reach by suburban and regional trains at short intervals. At the Schwabach train station there is a junction of bus and cab stands that go to the city center areas. Nuremberg Airport is 20 km away and can be reached from Nuremberg in a short time by suburban railway and subway. It is the second largest airport in Bavaria. On the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal, 10 km from Nuremberg, you can reach northern and western Europe as well as southeastern Europe (from the North Sea to the Black Sea) by water.

Schwabach is a livable city with many advantages: modern and traditional, close to the big city and close to nature. It is a city with a competitive economy, a city that is fit for the future and offers a good place to live.
